The Nice Guys Review

The Nice Guys stars Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling, Angourie Rice, Margaret Qualley, Beau Knapp, Keith David and Matt Bomer.

In 1977 Los Angeles, Private Investigator Holland March is hired to investigate the apparent suicide of Porn star, Misty Mountains. This leads him to a girl called Amelia, who hires Jackson Healey to keep March from following her. But when 2 guys turn up at Healey’s house looking for Amelia, Healey decides to track him down along with March. They learn that Misty’s death was not a suicide and that Amelia’s boyfriend was also murdered. Can the duo track down Amelia before it is too late?

The buddy cop genre is something we don’t get to see too much of nowadays. The film has a lot of humour and has a lot of laugh out loud moments. Ryan Gosling provides the majority of the humour which was refreshing for me, as I was not a big fan of Ryan Gosling but this film really changed my mind and his performance really impressed me and I really enjoyed his character and his relationship with his daughter. Ryan and Russell Crowe make a brilliant pair and have really good chemistry. The film did lack a bad guy really. Part of the film is trying to work out who did it and why but, without spoiling it, they did not feel threatening.

My main problem with the film is the run time. The film is just under 2 hours long and it feels a lot longer. The pacing was not well done, perhaps it needed a bit more action or just the plot to be advanced slightly quicker instead of more comedy. Comparing this to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Out of the Shadows and X-men Apocalypse, which have similar run times, they felt slightly short and I wanted to go on for longer but by the time this had ended that I was ready to leave.

Overall, I rate The Nice Guys 7/10! Lot’s of laughs to be had but slightly too long.
