Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 Review (No Spoilers)

You only get one chance to save the galaxy twice.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Kurt Russell, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Sean Gunn and Sylvester Stallone.

Set shortly after the adventures in the first film, the Guardians are now being hired to do jobs across the galaxy. However, when an employer turns on them, they are on the run which leads them into Star Lord’s father, Ego, but is he the father he was expecting when he abandoned his family many years ago.

Positives. The movie certainly brings back the magic of the first one. All the characters are back and because we pick up not too long since the events of the first film, everything felt completely natural the progression of the characters. One of the biggest strengths of the film is the comedy, this very well could be the funniest marvel movie ever made. I was worried that they would go with the easy jokes and use Baby Groot and Drax too much for the laughs, but it works well. Not every joke lands, but a large amount do and there are a lot of big laughs to be had.

The characters were a big selling point of the first film and part of the reason for the first film being such a success. In this film, we get an expansion, we get to know more about side characters like Nebula and Yondu, and it works, they both have important roles in the film and real help expand this team and the universe.

Negatives. The story was a slight let down for me, the second act slows the film down quite a bit and because the jokes don’t always land it doesn’t help the film. It just felt like they could have done more, especially as the team spend a majority of the time in one place, which is frustrating when they have this massive galaxy to explore. The villain was typical Marvel villain, but they go in a slightly different direction they normally do, but it needed more to really see their motivation.

Not as good as the first, but still an enjoyable film with a lot of laughs.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Be sure to stay for all post/mid credits scenes.
