War for the Planet of the Apes Review

For freedom. For family. For the planet.

War for the Planet of the Apes stars Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, Karin Konoval, Amiah Miller and Terry Notary.

The apes are at war with the remaining humans. After an attack on an ape base, the apes suffer huge losses and Caesar takes it personally. He heads to the human base and looks to end the war between man and ape.

Positives. I rewatched Rise and Dawn during the day before I went and watched War and the visual effects have improved so much. At the time the effects in Rise were amazing but the effects in War are incredible. This time I felt like I could actually see Andy Serkis under all the effects more than I could in the previous films. The level of detail is just incredible. The characters are fantastic, Caesar is a great character who has come such a long way since he started the Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The performances are fantastic and I really liked Woody Harrelson’s character, he was a very good and threatening villain.

Negatives. I don’t really have any. I didn’t love the ending but it was obviously leading to the original Planet of the Apes film so I understand what they were going for but I think it could have been done in a better way. The story at times is quite slow but it is soon picked up by something interesting happening. I would have liked to have a post credit scene linking to the original Planet of the Apes, but unfortunately there isn’t anything but it makes sense.

One of the greatest film trilogies of all time!

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
