I didn’t hate the trailers for this. They were cliché, yes but it felt like there was a good time hiding behind the trailer which perhaps felt more like the type of film we’ve been getting from Netflix in recent years.
The Lost City follows romance author, Loretta (Sandra Bullock), who’s latest story is based on a hidden city, when she is kidnapped by a billionaire, Abigail Fairfax (Daniel Radcliffe) to find the city real life for him to get the hidden treasure. Her cover star, Alan (Channing Tatum) is on a quest to track her down.
This film is exactly what it looks like on the tin. There’s no surprises, the action is generic but that’s not why you’re there, there’s a couple of laughs, but a lot didn’t work for me, some being slightly predictable but it’s one of those ones were if the humour hits for you then you’ll have a good time.
The biggest shame of the film is that it really did spoiler the scene stealer of the film, Brad Pitt. He doesn’t have a big role, but clearly has fun and some of the funnier moments, playing an expert mercenary and I can’t help but think it would have benefitted even more by not revealing him at all. More Brad Pitt in things please. We will see him and Sandra Bullock once again together in Bullet Train this summer.
I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed Daniel Radcliffe as the villain of the film. His filmography has been a mixed bag since Harry Potter, but I think he is slowly finally losing being known as just that one character. In this particularly as a slightly psycho wealthy businessman, his presence is good even when his delivery isn’t always perfect.
Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum both do a solid job, but we’ve seen them both in better and funnier, and seem to be lacking in any chemistry thats more than a friendship, but I don’t think that’s helped by the writing.
Overall, The Lost City is a fine comedy that some will love and others will hate, comedy is subjective, who knew. It’ll probably thrive on streaming, even if it they did just copy the posters of Dora and the Lost City of Gold.
