D23 2022 News Recap

I think people went into D23 expecting Comic Con level news, and they have definitely come out disappointed but that doesn’t mean there weren’t plenty of things revealed to get excited for so lets have a look at what to look forward to from Disney in the coming years.

THUNDERBOLTS

It was long rumoured that D23 was going to be the place where Marvel revealed the line-up for what is their version of DC’s Suicide Squad. The team in the comics typically is made up of villains, but the MCU version is going to be slightly different. We learnt from Kevin Feige that the team will be made up of Yelena (Florence Pugh), Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), US Agent (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) and Countess (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss). The film is set to start shooting next year and will release in July 2024.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: NEW WORLD ORDER

At the end of Falcon and Winter Solider it was announced that there would be a Captain America 4 in the works which would have Falcon continuing to take on the mantle of Captain America. At San Diego Comic Con a couple of months ago, the title was revealed and now we know that the villain of the film will be The Leader, played by Tim Blake Nelson. This is big as it was set up 14 years ago in The Incredible Hulk, but we never got a pay off until now. The film will also see Danny Ramirez return and become the new Falcon. Carl Lumbly will also reprise his role as Isaiah Bradley. Captain America: New World Order will release May 2024.

SECRET INVASION

The first Marvel Disney+ show of 2023, Secret Invasion will see Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) return to Earth after his adventures in space to find out that the shape shifting Skrulls are trying to takeover the planet for themselves. We got a first full length trailer which also gave us first looks at Emilia Clarke and Olivia Colman in the series.

WEREWOLF BY NIGHT

It was more of a surprise that we hadn’t heard more of this project sooner. It was only revealed a year ago by The Wrap that this project was happening and was seeking a lead. Less than a year later and we have official confirmation from Marvel that it will be released on Disney+ in less than a month on October 7th. The Halloween special is a homage to old horror classics and has a trailer, directed by Michael Giacchino and star Gael García Bernal.

THE MANDALORIAN SEASON 3

Onto Star Wars now and we got out first look at The Mandalorian Season 3. The teaser trailer not giving much away but does have plenty of Grogu for you, as well as the first live action look at Mandalore. The Mandalorian Season 3 will air in February.

AHSOKA

Not much news from this one aside from the casting of Eman Esfandi as Ezra. We last saw Ezra at the end of Star Wars: Rebels being shot to the outer rim with Thrawn. Now we have one of them cast, it seems that Ahsoka and Sabine’s quest to track Ezra down will be a success, but what will Thrawn be up to?

STAR WARS: TALES OF THE JEDI

Onto animation now, Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi received a first trailer showing off a young Count Dooku training Qui-Gon Jinn, as well as Ahsoka and everyone’s third favourite from Yoda’s species, Yaddle.

WILLOW

Another first trailer, this time for Willow. The sequel series to the original magical film sees Warwick Davis return and will drop at the end of November this year.

THE LITTLE MERMAID

Perhaps the most talked about reveal from the weekend was our first look at Disney’s live action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. The teaser doesn’t show much but we do get a first look at Halle Bailey and hear a small snippet of Part of Your World.

INSIDE OUT 2

One of Pixar’s best releases within the last decade was Inside Out. Looking into the mind of a young girl and her emotions with all the changes going on. The sequel promises to have even more changes as Riley becomes a teenager and all the changes going on then. Amy Poehler will return as Joy and Inside Out 2 will release in 2024.

DISENCHANTED

The sequel to the beloved Enchanted is just a few months away and we got our first trailer. Amy Adams returns as Giselle as she accidentally starts to turn her suburb into a fairytale world. Patrcik Dempsey, James Marsden and Idina Menzel return and are joined by Maya Rudolph. Disenchanted drops on Disney+ November 24th.

OTHER NEWS

There you have that’s all the news from D23 2022. No there wasn’t any huge Marvel casting yet for Fantastic 4, no Deadpool 3 update, no mention of Mutants or the X-Men just yet despite those pesky rumours and no update on the next Star Wars film. Unfortunately, this just means we have a while til those rumours get squashed, perhaps maybe not even until San Diego Comic Con in July 2023, a long way a way yet.
