MICHAEL GAMBON RIP

Michael Gambon was a much beloved actor, known primarily for his role of Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films, a role he himself took over from Richard Harris when he passed away in 2002. He continued to deliver powerful performances in the rest of the franchise and is a big highlight for fans.

He made his first onscreen appearance in 1965’s Othello starring the legendary Laurence Olivier and continued to work until 2019 where his final performance was in Cordelia. He was twice nominated for Emmy Awards and won 4 TV Baftas, he was also recognised by his peers by winning 2 SAG awards for his roles in The King’s Speech and Gosford Park.

Daniel Radcliffe has issued a statement honouring the life of his costar on Variety via this link.

Thoughts with Michael Gambon’s family at this time.

ARGYLLE TRAILER

Matthew Vaughn brings a unique style to the action genre and has been doing so for several years. His latest film, Argylle finally got it’s trailer this week which promises a lot more of this action. The plot was kept underwraps until the trailer released but now we know it’s about an author who gets caught up in the real world of spy’s and espionage when she finds out she has been writing about events which actually happened. It looks a lot of fun honestly, I hope the film gets a decent cinema run as I think it could do well like Vaughn’s previous work, Kingsman did. The film is made by Apple Studios and will be on Apple TV+ after it’s cinema run in February 2024. Argylle stars Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Dua Lipa, John Cena, Samuel L Jackson, Bryan Cranston, Ariana DeBose, Sofia Boutella, Rob Delaney and Catherine O’Hara.

WGA STRIKE IS OVER!

Finally the writers strike has come to an end after negotiations were successful. A really positive step in the right direction as Hollywood can start to get back to work, now writers are set to be getting the pay they deserve. The writers were on strike for 148 days and are now protected against the advancement of AI in the industry. Netflix are qucikly getting back to work with the focus being on Stranger Things Season 5 and Wednesday Season 2. HBO are focusing Euphoria Season 3, The White Lotus Season 3 and The Last of Us Season 2.

However the Screen Actors Guild is still on strike, so normality in Hollywood won’t be returned just yet, so we are still away from seeing Actors out on the red carpet and doing press until terms can be agreed with the studios.

NOLAN TO DIRECT BOND?

Perhaps an unsurprising rumour has rumour has hit the internet, but it’s certainly one to be excited about if you’re a fan of Bond. World of Reel reports that Nolan has met with EON Productions, and is onboard to direct 2-3 Bond films, provided he gets creative control. These films would be period pieces adapting Fleming’s books and being set in the same time. The rumour also confirms that Aaron Taylor-Johnson has screentested for the role, likely an actor Nolan would be happy with as Taylor-Johnson has a role in Tenet, arguably the most Bond like of Nolan’s work so far.

In my eyes Nolan can do anything he wants, this would be a project he deeply cares about after he has gone on the record many times saying how much he loves Bond. He is one of the best filmmakers ever and I will watch whatever he decides to do next Bond or not. If it is Bond, then that’s a huge win to help audiences move on from Daniel Craig.

WISH TRAILER

Disney animation’s big film to celebrate 100 years got it’s first full trailer this week. Wish blends 2D and 3D animation together, as well as certainly giving a more traditional Disney princess tone to the film mixed with the modern sense of humour we have seen more of recently. I think this film’s really going to struggle at the box office, we saw it recently with Elemental which had a bad start but went on to be very succesful at the cinemas and then again when it was on Disney+. Unless it’s a sequel, I think Disney is going to continue to struggle with animation at the box office while they have their own streaming service. Still it looks decent and with a short run time, I’m sure families who do see it will enjoy it when Wish is released in cinemas in November.
