DUNE: PROPHECY TRAILER
The biggest and most unexpected news of the week was MAX dropping the first trailer for Dune: Prophecy. We’ve known this series has been coming for a while, but I didn’t realise it was arriving as soon as later this year. Dune: Part Two was very highly praised (rightfully so) and anything in this universe is very exciting. The trailer very much sets the scene of the Bene Gesserit, manipulating people in the universe with their prohecy long before the arrival of Paul Atreides. It certainly looks like a space Game of Thrones and I’m here for it. This has straight up become my most anticipated TV show.

WICKED TRAILER
Wicked is one of the most anticapated films of the year, particularly for musical fans. Director, John M Chu had a hit on his hands with Crazy Rich Asians which was a big box office success, and then followed it up with the underappreciated In The Heights, which wasn’t even his first dabble in to musicals after directing Jem and the Holograms, and having directed two of the Step Up movies. He has assembled an all star cast lead by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande to bring this beloved musical theatre show to the big screen, and it has a great chance of being a huge hit.

NICHOLAS CAGE AS SPIDER-MAN NOIR
Nicholas Cage’s portrayal of Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse got a lot of people very excited, and became a lot of people’s favourites Spidersona from the film, and fans begun to demand that he play him in live action. It’s be rumoured for a little while that Prime Video were developing a series for Sony about this version of the wall crawler, and this week we got confirmation that Cage would be portraying the character in the series. Fantastic casting of course, I’m excited to see how this lands, Prime have a great track record with series in recent years, particularly superhero ones with The Boys and Invincible, and if they can replicate that success with Spider-Man characters I’m all for it. There were previous reports of a Silk series being in the works too, but I believe that series is being reworked at the very least, so might be a long way before seeing that one, but a hit with this series would certainly help them push that one a long, and others I’m sure. Maybe they could even do Madame Web some justice.

DOCTOR WHO EPISODE 1 & 2 REVIEW
Doctor Who lost a lot of fans when Jodie Whittaker was brought into the show, by no fault of her own, but being let down by the poor writing of the show, with it having lost the fun element of it which got fans interested in the first place. The tone was all over the place trying to have a serious plot with silly characters doesn’t work. Fans were relieved when Russell T Davies was announced that he was returning as showrunner, and he hit a home run with his first three episodes back at the wheel when David Tennant returned to seal off his arc when 3 strong episodes, as well as introuding Ncuti Gatwa as the new Doctor. We then had an okay Christmas special which was introducing Millie Gibson as his new assistant (which feels like a waste now we know her story will be wrapped by the end of this season, as she is being replaced for the next season).
I knew it would be the once the season actually got going that the show would start to feel more like it did. Gatwa and Gibson are decent enough in the role, however the first episode of Space Babies, fell really flat for me. Wasn’t particularly entertaining and weird, an episode which felt like it would’ve suited a Tennant or Smith Doctor rather than this new fun Gatwa Doctor who we are yet to see a whole load of. It felt like a mid season episode which didn’t deliver too much of any importance. The second episode The Devil’s Chord, I enjoyed a lot more and I actually felt nailed the tone it was going for, again I might not have loved everything about it, but I understood what it was trying (it’s an episode about The Beatles, obviously it was going to have a musical number in it). The next episode is actually written by Stephen Moffat who wrote a lot of the Matt Smith era, so I’m very intrigued to see how that will work with Gatwa Doctor. An okay start, the season is only 8 episodes long so it can’t be moving too slowly, before we unravel the mystery of Ruby Sunday throughout the season.
