MARVEL RETURNING TO HALL H

Hall H at San Diego Comic Con is renowned for the big panels that get hosted in that room every Comic Con, the biggest franchises often bring their big stars out to talk about upcoming projects, as well as making announcements and showing off exclusive footage at the event. Marvel particularly helped the Hall gain its reputation and have been a regular attendant in the room until recent years when both Marvel and DC have opted not to make any appearance at the event. DC have confirmed they won’t be in attendance (we’ll come back to DC in the next story), so it’s a big chance for Marvel to claim the headlines with big announcements.

So what could we actually see from Marvel in Hall H? It’s weird timing for Marvel as Deadpool & Wolverine will hit cinemas that weekend that SDCC is taking place, so the audience won’t recieve any early clips or even an earlier showing of the film. The next projects in the MCU will be Agatha All Along and Daredevil: Born Again both Disney+ series’ that could have a mini panel and trailers with Agatha All Along likely being released online. I would also expect at the very least some footage of Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts, with likely appearances from the casts. Fantastic Four won’t have started shooting at this stage but I would expect to see Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach to show their faces. Anything more than these will be a bonus and over a year away. I’d like to see an announcement about Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and what’s going on with that film now along with Avengers: Secret Wars. I’d expect some new announcements as well, hopefully being X-Men news, Moon Knight S2/Midnight Suns and less likely Spider-Man 4 news (just unlikely as that would be Sony’s job).

SUPERMAN SET PICTURES

DC won’t be in attendance mostly due to the fact that their lead creative James Gunn is well into production with the first film in the DCU, Superman. This week led to the film moving it’s production outside and has given us our first glimpses at some of the other key players in the film, as well as a better look at the suit that David Corenswet is wearing in the role. In these set photos we get our first look at Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luther, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Snr, Maria Gabriel as the Engineer and others. However, the best look was getting to see Edi Gathegi as Mr Terrific in what might be the most comic accurate costume ever. I do still wish DC had done official posts to see the costumes for the first time, rather than having to see them as set photos first.

NOSFERATU TRAILER

Robert Eggers has quickly gained a strong reputation in Hollywood with his unique horror films. His films The Witch, The Lighthouse and The Northman have all done well critically and amongst fans. His next film is an adapation of one of the earliest films that was ever released. 1922’s Nosferatu is a classic of the genre and stands up to this day, if you can get over it being silent and black & white (I know some people struggle with one of those, let alone both!). Seeing a modern version of this through Egger’s unique eyes, might help the film seperate itself from the Dracula story it very obviously ripped off at the time. An all star cast is assembled including Bill Skarsgard, Willem Dafoe, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Lily-Rose Depp and Ralph Ineson, and is set to release in cinemas on January 1st 2025.

DONALD SUTHERLAND 1935-2024

Donald Sutherland sadly passed away this week after being ill for some time. His son and actor Kiefer Sutherland took to social media to announce the sad news. Donald Sutherland had a fantastic career which started in the 60s and continued to his last credited performance last year. He appeared in notable titles such as M*A*S*H, Don’t Look Now, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, JFK, A Time to Kill, Pride & Prejudice, but will likely be most known for his role as President Snow in The Hunger Games series. Stars he worked alongside Kiera Knightley, Ralph Fiennes, Francis Lawrence and Elliott Gould have all paid tribute to the late actor.
