A Quiet Place 1 & 2 were both 2 of the most memorable cinema experiences I’ve had over the last couple of years. The films have such a focus on sound that makes them must watches in a cinema, and have you on the edge of your seat the entire run time.
A Quiet Place: Day One takes us back to the day the creatures first invaded Earth, when they landed in one of the noisiest cities in the world, New York City. The film follows a woman, Sam, and her cat, who are on a trip out in New York when the attack happens.

When it was confirmed that John Krasinski wasn’t going to be returning to direct this entry, I was a little worried it wouldn’t quite manage to hit the heights of the previous entries. Michael Sarnoski wasn’t a name I was familiar with, but then I realised he directed one of Nicholas Cage’s best performances in recent history with Pig, with Kraskinski and Sarnoski having an input on the story. Because of when the story for this film takes place, the film certainly has a more apocalyptic tone, closer to World War Z or I Am Legend feeling rather than a straight up horror that the previous entries had. It works for this film, but I did find myself missing the tenseness that appears in the first two films, compared to the chaos and panic of this film.
Lupita Nyong’o consistently delivers no matter what role she is and is a fantastic lead for this film. This is the first time we have seen her delve into the horror genre, most notably appearing in Jordan Peele’s Us. She always gives everything to every role she takes on, and delivers once again, carrying this film along with a fantastic performance by Schnitezel and Nico (the cats), as well as Joseph Quinn (who is set to have a big year with this film, Gladiator 2 at the end of the year, and shooting underway for Fantastic Four), who I completely forgot was in the film until he pops up in the film. Even the likes of Alex Wolff and Djimon Hounsou have small roles in this film do a really good job with the limited time they have.

Without going into spoilers, I hope this film ties more into A Quiet Place 3, and I think there’s an obvious way that could be done with a certain character likely being the connecting tissue which will likely give this film an even bigger importance as the series continues.
Overall, A Quiet Place: Day One continues to be fantastic viewing in the cinema and will have you on the edge of your seat, may less a straight up horror, but shifts tone slightly to a more apocalyptic and chaotic feeling, than the slow tension we have had previously. It all works and comes together thanks to a stellar cast who deliver and make this the horror to check out this summer movie season.
