Don’t worry no spoilers here, if you don’t want to know anything however, don’t read this review yet, but no major spoilers here.
Deadpool’s introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been highly anticipated since Disney bought 20th Century Fox. We all knew that the X-Men would be rebooted due to the age of most of the actors in the standard timeline of X-Men films. However, Deadpool only really was introduced in 2016 with his own film, however Reynolds obviously played a version of him in 2009 alongside Hugh Jackman in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and quickly Reynolds became known for the character as important for the character as Jackman was Wolverine.
Deadpool & Wolverine sees Wade Wilson having lost his drive for life after going through difficult times with Vanessa, when suddenly the TVA turns up on his birthday to warn him that his timeline is going to be destroyed. Deadpool decides there’s only one person who can help him save his world, Wolverine!

Director Shawn Levy has had an interesting career, the large percentage of his credits in the entertainment industry are as a producer rather than directing, but let that be said he has had a long career in both fields, working in both film and Tv, having directed episodes of Stranger Things, Cheaper by the Dozen, Night at the Museum, Free Guy and The Adam Project, with those latter two projects teaming up with Ryan Reynolds. It’s that friendship with Reynolds that got Levy the job of directing the third Deadpool film, and it was honestly at that point that I started to get worried about this film. Levy has a certain tone/sense of humour which I don’t love and appeals for easy watching in family friendly films, not the sense of humour I want from a Deadpool film. A film that has so many writers is always a concern but 3 out of the 5 had worked on the previous Deadpool films, it was Levy and Zeb Wells who only worked on this one that I will put the responsibility of this film not hitting the same as the previous installments. The film is very much a love letter to the Fox Marvel films, but feels like it is mostly missing that heart, which is partly why the previous films were so well regarded and what I enjoyed. If it doesn’t have the heart, it needs to have the jokes, but it doesn.t unfortunately. There’s several jokes that do land, but on the whole I found most didn’t or were easy jokes.
That paragraph makes it sound like I didn’t enjoy the film, I certainly did, just not as much as I would’ve liked. The biggest strength of the film is what the film is sold on, the relationship between Reynolds and Jackman. Both adore their characters so much, and have very much made the career for each of them. Reynolds is Deadpool and Jackman is Wolverine, whoever replaces them will have an extremely tough job.

The film has some fun action sequences, which help redeem the film and are the most memorable parts of the film, particularly a very unique and fun opening sequence, a fun one around the middle with characters I won’t spoil, and another one towards the end of the film. Unfortunately the story reasons for introducing the spoiler characters is too weak to give those action sequences even more of an impact.
Overall, Deadpool & Wolverine is still a good time and very enjoyable watch, with some fun action sequences and good performances from the legendary title characters. Unfortunately the comedy, and heart which was the strength of Deadpool and Deadpool 2 isn’t there this time around making it the weakest of the 3 films, but still a good time, and one that definetly should be watched on the biggest screen possible.
What did you think of Deadpool & Wolverine?
I’ll try and do a spoiler talk/what’s next for these characters over the coming days, but a recap of all the news from this years San Diego Comic Con will be the next post, so be on the look out for that within the next couple of days.
