In the build up for this film, it was heavily rumoured and discussed what the twist, and what the drama the title was referring to was going to be. There was a leak out there, but if you aren’t deep into the film twitter world then you probably didn’t know what to expect. The marketing of the film, heavily teases what it could be and the mystery without giving away a hint at what it really is.

The Drama sees an engaged couple, Emma and Charlie, a week before their wedding are at a meal, with the maid of honour and the best man, where they decided to reveal to each other the worst thing they have ever done. When Emma’s secret is revealed, Charlie begins to question if he even really knows Emma at all, and if their relationship can survive it.

I won’t reveal what the twist of the film is, but that is the big crux of the film that is getting people into the cinema, as well as seeing 2 very talented actors. It’s definitely going to be a very divisive film that flirts on the line of what is too much for a film. There’s an audience that will be angry at this film, will say this film isn’t appropriate and shouldn’t have bee n made. Regardless, the film has been made. This isn’t the first time the subject of the twist has been covered in media, but it might be the first time it’s been covered in a dark romantic comedy. It’s also a film that makes you think how you would react if you were put in any of the people’s scenarios. It certainly doesn’t justify the drama, and I think deliberately adds at least 1 character to almost balance it out.

The performances are strong. Robert Pattinson and Zendaya have a big year with both actors appearing in The Odyssey and Dune: Part 3, and Zendaya also appearing in Euphoria S3 and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The pair both have fantastic chemistry with each other, and thrive bouncing off another very talented actor at their peak. Pattinson is more of the lead if either of them are, and where the interest in the story is as he tries to deal with the revelation and whether it’s something he can move past.

The film is written by the director Kristoffer Borgli and I think where the film struggles at times. I quite enjoy the film generally, and I think it’s well directed, but the writing stops it from being a top tier film. I really like the tone, I think the film absolutely nails the dark comedy, and does have a few laughs. Elements of the story work really well, but particularly as the film goes on certain parts of what characters do don’t work, and feel messy, and inconsistent with the character. You could potentially justify it by saying the character isn’t thinking, but I think that’s lazy. I think the film would’ve benefited from another writer being onboard to give it a once over, rewriting the couple of scenes that don’t work as well. The film has a really strong first half, and that’s where it really thrives and gets your mind thinking, but as the film progresses it becomes almost like it doesn’t fully know what to do with itself.

Overall, The Drama might be the most controversial film of the year, but has a lot to like about it. Strong performances from the 2 all star leads, and a strong sense of the dark comedy tone that the film is going for. It might struggle as the film goes on, and doesn’t nail every beat. It won’t be a film for everyone, but if you enjoy a dark comedy, then you’ll definitely enjoy this one.
