Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens Spoiler Talk

This is a review of all the spoilers in The Force Awakens, so if you haven’t seen the movie yet then go watch it then come back. You have been warned.

Right so I will talk about my favourite character, Rey, first. I love the character of Rey,  I loved her introduction on Jakku and I instantly cared about her. I love that she is force sensitive. Yes, she learns how to do mind tricks and use a lightsaber and use the force quickly but the this could just mean that she is incredibly powerful. The fact that she is this powerful, leads me to think that she is Luke’s daughter. I don’t think she is Han and Leia’s otherwise they would have said something. My favourite parts of the film involved Rey. I loved her force vision, I thought that was incredible and I loved when she took on Kylo Ren. Her reaction when she pulls the lightsaber out of the snow, past Kylo and then takes him on and gives him a bad ass scar across his face.

Finn was a character I was not too sure about, we knew from the trailer that he would use a lightsaber, so we naturally assumed that he is force sensitive, but it looks like that he might not be and I like that. Finn is a storm trooper that when he sees what they are doing goes rogue, then just turns into a normal guy on the run from the First Order, I would have liked to see a little bit more of a focus on him previously being a stormtrooper. I did have a problem with his ability with a lightsaber, how did he know how to use it? It would of been okay if they had explained that he had been trained with a similar weapon but he was just part of the sanitation so why was he even in the fight at the begininng? A couple of things that were not explained there but I look forward to seeing where his story goes. I think it could be very interesting if he is not force sensitive at all and to see him frustrated that he can’t use the force would be a good contrast to the clear power that Rey will have.

Poe was a little bit disappointing to me. I liked his character but we just didn’t see enough with him. I liked Poe’s relationship with Finn and it will be interesting to see where that goes and if Poe will eventually get to fly the Millennium Falcon.

Kylo Ren was an amazing villain. I loved his introduction to the film, and I thought the opening in general was very strong. The moment that he stops a laser mid air was amazing and we were in for something special. When he finally took of the mask, I was expecting some sort of scarring on his face but there wasn’t any and he just looks normal, but the way that the character the progresses to be so conflicted is how I believe Anakin should have been in the prequels. I loved how when he was told bad news he would just pop out his lightsaber and destroy stuff. I was not at all surprised to learn that he is Han and Leia’s son or that he ended up killing Han. That moment was so clear that he would kill Han and it might just be the moment that sends him further towards the dark side. Can not wait to see more of him in the rest of the films.

Onto Luke Skywalker, the reason we did not see him in the marketing is because he is only in the last couple of shots and he looks amazing! I was a bit worried about how he would look and what he would be doing. I liked that he was training some people, but because Kylo was tempted by Snoke, which caused Leia and Han to split that Luke went into hiding and I am okay with that. I don’t know how else they could have fit Luke into the rest of the story anyway.

Captain Phasma was very disappointing, I expected a bit more from her and her to do more but the film had a primary focus on Rey, Finn, Kylo Ren and Han Solo so there wasn’t much time to focus on her but I am sure we will see more in episode 8 and 9.

The reveal of Snoke not being 50 foot tall was fantastic. I am pretty convinced that Snoke is Darth Plagueis, so when I saw Snoke I thought well how is Luke can take down someone that big and it was very cleverly done as Snoke of course will not actually be that big when we finally see him. But he is mysterious and I look forward to seeing more of him and possibly seeing him training Kylo Ren would be pretty cool. We have never seen the sith being trained so that would be good to see.

The story was the main thing that really let me down in the film because it was just A New Hope again. I think the Starkiller base could have been abit more interesting if they had actually explained why the First Order had built it and why they were destroying planets as it was not explained at all. I don’t actually think that Starkiller base needed to be a Death Star. It would have been okay if it was just a normal base on a planet or a Star Destroyer. It just needed some more explaining. It would have been interesting if there were other innocent people on the planet so the Resistance had to think of a different way of taking it down without destroying the planet.

However, I still really liked the film and I would say it might be my third or fourth favourite Star Wars film. I love what it has set up and look forward to what Episode 8 is going to bring.
