Daredevil Season 2 Review (Spoilers)

Yes, I have watched all 13 episodes of the second season of Daredevil already.

Daredevil stars Charlie Cox, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Jon Bernthal and Elodie Yung.

This season of Daredevil takes place about a year after the events of the first time. This time around we find that Daredevil crosses paths with antihero The Punisher, who likes to kill his opponent instead of putting them in prison. The Punisher must answer for his crimes. Matt Murdoch also gets another problem as one day, his ex-girlfriend, Elektra turns up asking for help. Can Matt balance the duty of being a blind lawyer for his failing business as well as stopping his city from being taken over The Hand.

I enjoyed the first season but I did struggle with it a bit, as I felt the story didn’t advance quick enough. When I found out that The Punisher was going to be in the second season I was very excited and looked forward to seeing a lot of action, and I was not disappointed. The action is still probably the best part of the show. They had the hallway scene in the first season, and after seeing how people reacted to that, they added more fantastic fighting scenes that are unforgettable and it was shot beautifully as well.

The next best thing about the show is the characters. I thought that the performances by everyone involved were fantastic and really improved from the previous season. Charlie Cox really upped his game and this season I cared a lot more about Daredevil, but maybe that is just because he now has a really cool suit. I really hope he gets to join The Avengers in Infinity War. The Punisher and Elektra were great additions to the show and elevated the performance of Charlie Cox as Daredevil. I really liked Elektra and Matt together, I think the season would have been a lot less interesting without her in it. It was great to see Kingpin and Stick (no stone though) return this season, and it would have been a big mistake not to include them.

However, there were a few things that the show didn’t quite get right for me. I was expecting more of The Punisher killing people, we get a bit of it in the first couple of episodes and at the end but there is a large part in the middle where I got a bit frustrated, because I wanted to see more of him. On the flip side, someone I wanted to see less of was Karen Page. I felt like she became one of the big characters with her relationship with Matt, but I just wasn’t interested enough in her when they weren’t together. We also didn’t see enough of Foggy, we saw him a lot in court but then after we didn’t see him as much.

Another wasted opportunity, was how little the show was tied into the rest of the MCU. We get a couple of newspaper covers about the attack on New York in the first Avengers movie and they name drop Jessica Jones a couple of times but I was expecting a bit more. I know they want to keep the Netflix shows slightly separate from the rest of the MCU, but they could do a few more up to date nods, like seeing The Avengers tower or a certain Spider-man mentioned or swinging past. I also thought we would get a few nods to the future shows like Luke Cage and Iron Fist, but we did not (unless I missed them).

Overall, Daredevil season 2, ups the stakes from season 1, with better characters and more action. I rate the second season of Daredevil 9/10! Bring us The Defenders, Moon Knight and The Punisher series please Netflix.
