Justice League Review (No Spoilers)

After watching Batman v Superman, like most people, I was disappointed and had very little hope for the DCEU going forward. Then Suicide Squad came around and, despite enjoying it more than most, I was still not looking forward to Justice League. Wonder Woman rolls around and I start to feel a bit better and have higher hopes than I previously did but still being very worried.

If you don’t want to know anything at all about Justice League then watch the film first then come back, but there will be no spoilers in this review.

After Superman’s death, Batman and Wonder Woman look to assemble a team of people with powers, (Cyborg, The Flash and Aquaman) after a new intergalactic threat, Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons, arrive on Earth looking to take over the world by tracking down the three mother boxes.

This movie is a step in the right direction for DC, not a huge step but a step none the less. I have quite a few problems with the film but it is a fun time, audiences will definitely have fun and there is a lot of really strong moments.

For me, the standout was Wonder Woman. She was a big highlight in BvS and was fantastic in her own film and continues to impress. She has great scenes with every member of the Justice League and I can not wait to see more of her in future DC projects. More Wonder Woman equals wins for DC, so it is a shame we won’t see her again til 2019 when she returns in her next solo film. Gal Gadot has completely become this character and has made it her own.

Batman is an interesting one, the character is good but you can feel that it is being set up for Ben Affleck to exit the DCEU and I would be okay with that. As much as I love Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne, he is getting a bit old for this universe and the character says as much, which would be why if the universe gets reset in Flashpoint then it would perfect to replace Ben Affleck then, just for the sake of the universe and the future of the franchise.

Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg were all mixed and created different problems but good in their own way. I really like Jason Mamoa as Aquaman, its great casting and is an interesting character but I wanted to see more of Atlantis, I want to see more explained about his past. The same can be said The Flash and Cyborg and it does make me wonder how many questions people who don’t their backgrounds will have. Which is the difference between this movie and the Marvel universe, the Marvel universe had set all their characters up before they came together and it worked brilliantly but you are missing that with DC. But now we have seen all the characters it allows the DC universe to move on and we have got this step done with.

A quick word on the villain, Steppenwolf, he is bad. The focus is not on him at all, there is little explanation behind his character and his motivation is unclear, but for comic fans you know he is just the calm before the storm.

I have a few other problems with the film, especially a few continuity problems from BvS and things I did not like but I will do a Spoiler review to talk about those problems and the post credit scenes (in particular the amazing second post credit scene).

Overall, the film is a fun time. There are good moments, mixed with some problems and a lot of CGI. The whole film feels rushed, and I would love to see an extended version of everything that cut. The future is bright for the DCEU.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
