Spielberg, Hanks, Streep, we all knew that this was going to get some nominations come award season.

When material leaks to the press about the government lying to the public, it is down to the first ever female newspaper publisher and the editor of The Washington Post, as they decide whether it is right to take on the government and if the public have a right to know.

When you see any of those three names on a movie poster, you know that you’re going to get something special. All three do their part to get this film the nominations that this film deserves.

Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks lead this film and both turn in (expectedly) good performances, with once again Streep stealing every single scene that she is in. It is ironic that a lot of the time her character draws attention from everyone in the room, something I’m sure Streep gets everywhere she goes.

Hanks is good, but we have certainly seen him do better. I’m not taking anything away from his performance but because Hanks is great we expect good performances from him, and in a year where Gary Oldman and Timothee Chalamet (Maybe Daniel Day-Lewis, I have not seen Phantom Thread yet) stand out, Hanks just doesn’t stand out as much as they do.

The rest of the cast does a good job, I’ve said it before but when you have two people turning in strong performances it elevates everyone else in the film, most specifically Bob Odenkirk, who impressed me a lot.

Where this film falls short for me is, at times, it does drag, specifically before The Washington Post get there hands on the papers and towards the end where they go in and out of deciding whether to actually post the information or not, just goes on for a bit longer than I would have liked.

The relevancy to events going on today (Fake news) are very obvious, so it is the perfect time to get this film out.

Overall, The Post is a solid film which slightly drags at times but does enough to keep you interested through good directing and strong performances.
