Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales PS5 Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

In 2018, PlayStation rocked the world with a Spider-Man game that blew people away. Taking inspiration from the Batman: Arkham series with the fighting combat style, Spider-Man was the perfect choice for a game, with a series of games already having success particularly with Spider-Man 2 which was praised and memorable for the swinging around New York. My history with the game is that I was so excited to play it, that I specifically bought a PS4 to play the game, and finished it within the week.

So did I buy a PS5 essentially just to play Spider-Man: Miles Morales? Yes and no. I’ve played a couple of other PlayStation exclusives since I got a PS4, particularly God of War, which grabbed my attention and with the announcement of a sequel and a guarentee that a second Spider-Man game is on the way, it just made sense for me to make the switch over to PlayStation from Xbox, after I had been loyal to Xbox since the 360, which doesn’t have their big exclusive, being Halo: Infinite which won’t release til 2021.

Anyway, after I managed to get a PS5 ordered on launch day and quickly made sure to get my hands on Spider-Man: Miles Morales. I had heard how short the game was before, so I had no expectations as far as that was concerned. Miles is also a relatively new addition to the Spider family given that he was first introduced in the comics in 2011. He became much more mainstream however after his first appearance on the big screen in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which came out just a few months after the PS4 game was released and had also introduced people to Miles and teased that more Miles was on the way.

The game picks up basically where we left off Peter and Miles, but Peter is going on a trip abroad so Miles has to step up and become Spider-Man for himself, especially with Roxxon launching a new energy source, a villain is out to stop them so Miles must save New York, while finding out what it is be Spider-Man.

The game is out just 2 years after the first so I didn’t expect too much change gameplay wise, it’s Spider-Man so it was always going to be set in New York, just with the added layer of snow as it’s set in Winter. There aren’t radical changes in fighting styles, there’s the slight sense of flair about Miles though, most notably when swinging which really adds to the character. You also have two additional powers which are unique to Miles that add a lot to the game and keep it fresh and give you many ways to take down a villain.

There’s some additional characters that I thought were a lot of fun. Ganke is Miles’ right hand man and adds a lot to the story, but the best character and stand is Hailey, a deaf street artist who is in the game a few times and has a couple of really nice interactions where you get to see Spider-Man doing sign language, a really nice touch, which probably means a lot to some people around the world.

Another solid game in the Spider-Man PlayStation universe, bringing the great character of Miles Morales to the fore front, solidifying his place as a Spider-Man. The gameplay continues to be great and swinging through the buildings of NYC is fun as ever, the only disappointment is that it is longer and I would have liked to have seen a couple of more villains, something that we have teased in the post credit scene which is worth sticking around for.

With a lack of film news and releases recently, it’s been a while since I’ve had much to talk about but with Mulan now on Disney+ and Mank on Netflix, as well as the release of Cyberpunk 2077 later this week, I hope to bring you more posts soon.

What did you think of Spider-Man: Miles Morales? Have you got your hands on a PS5?
