I have so many problems with the Sony Universe of Spider-Man characters (or whatever they’re calling their cinematic universe at the moment) but I seem to be in the minority. Movie fans flocked big time to watch the first Venom. It certainly had a fun vibe and isn’t a bad film, but is far from the typical Venom that I like.

Venom: Let there be Carnage picks up where the first left off with Eddie Brock having met killer Cletus Kassidy. After an encounter between the two part of the symbiote in Eddie attaches itself to Kassidy who escapes and is intent on killing Eddie and Venom.

If I’m going to compare it to the first one, two of the biggest complaints I had was the villain and the CGI. Woody Harrelson returns with some less ridiculous hair than we saw at the end of the first one, I guess he makes a slightly better villain but I’d have liked to have seen more of him actually being Carnage, and having it being more of a 50/50 being Venom and Carnage and seeing each sides of their story through the film. The CGI is also vastly improved from the first, perhaps not a big surprise when you get Andy Serkis onboard who is known for his motion capture performances as Gollum and Caesar in the recent Planet of the Apes trilogy.

The dynamic between Eddie and Venom is good and works well, is fun and funnier than the first. They really try hard to replicate the firsts tone and what people enjoyed about the campiness of the film. I still have problems with the depictions of Venom and the tone for the character. I prefer my Venom to be more serious, less joking around for no real reason and making the film more of a comedy than it should be. I will always remember when there were rumours that Venom was going to be a horror, and that is much more interesting to me and I still wanna see that side of the character.

Overall, if you like the first Venom then you’ll like this one, it’s much more of the same, but I marginally think it’s better, purely as it has a couple more laughs, and goes by quick enough as it’s only just 90 minutes long!
