I don’t know why or how I got particularly hyped for X. Maybe it was a lack of horror so far in 2022, maybe it was because I get hyped for any A24 film, maybe it was because indie horror sitting with a very strong score on Rotten Tomatoes. Either way X has arrived in cinemas and is ready to shock audiences.
X follows a group of young adult film stars and makers at a farm to shoot their latest film. However, the farm is owned by an elderly couple who start to act very strange when they discover why the group are there.
I haven’t seen a single film Ti West has made before, but as I said in the intro when A24 get involved then it immediately makes film fans take note. A24 have such a strong record picking up the best of indie films with the likes of Ex Machina, Hereditary, Uncut Gems, Midsommar, Lady Bird, Swiss Army Man and Moonlight being in their catalogue, giving chances to indie filmmakers and bringing them into the limelight and giving them extra buzz and a push they deserve.
It’s clear to see, in this film, that Ti West is a huge fan of old school horror films. It feels exactly like a 70’s horror slasher film, but also contains references to classic horror films including Psycho and The Shining. I don’t mind a film that pays tribute to a genre, but without having actual scares it’s almost easier to consider this film a spoof rather a straight up horror which I think it could’ve done with being. There is a lot of gore and some gruesome kills, but is never particularly scary, something the film acknoledges it doesn’t get to until half way through the film.
Overall, X is a solid homage to horror of yester year. I somewhat just had higher expectations for the film, as it doesn’t deliver the scares or intensity I want in a horror but is a lot of fun and has some fun and unique kills, with a cast who clearly enjoyed being a part of.
