What’s next for the John Wick Universe?

This post contains spoilers for John Wick: Chapter 4! You’ve been warned! If you haven’t seen the film yet, check out my spoiler free review here.

After John Wick seems to have died at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, the future of the universe could head off in several directions, especially with Marquis’ line about killing off the idea of John Wick and everything his plan to bring down the High Table represents. It’s ambiguous whether Wick is actually dead, but if he is there is still work to be done to bring down the table for good and other characters that could continue what he started. Spin-offs are guaranteed and the creators have teased an announcement in a month or so about what is next.

THE CONTINENTAL

We already know what is next. The Continental hotel is a safe haven for assassins and hitmen of this world, a place where business is not allowed to be conducted and anyone who breaks those rules is killed for doing so as we saw in the first John Wick. It was announced several years ago that The Continental was getting a spin-off and over the last few days we’ve learnt more about it, now knowing that it will be a prequel set in the 70s and it will be 3 episodes of 90 minutes. Mel Gibson and Colin Woodell as a young Winston. The show is set to premiere on Peacock in September this year.

BALLERINA

The only other confirmed project we have at the moment, and is currently in post-production is Ballerina, a spin-off from John Wick 3. The film will star Ana De Armas as the lead and Norman Reedus, as well as Lance Reddick in what will be his final on screen performance. The film is directed by Len Wiseman who directed Underworld and a mix of episodes from different shows. The film is aiming for a first half of 2024 release.

JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 5

Before the pandemic, it was announced there was going to be a Chapter 4 & Chapter 5, it was then unclear and the films were changed, seemingly combined into the one film instead of what seems like would’ve been a Part 1 and Part 2. There certainly is a chance that John Wick: Chapter 5 still happens given how well the film has done at the box office, the only thing that stops them now is the fate of John Wick and that is eluded to being dead and we go as far as seeing his tombstone, and certainly seems to be dead according Reeves but producer, Basil Iwanyck, in an interview with Indiewire, says its more ambiguous. I want to see another one because I love these movies, and see the potential when the High Table hasn’t been taken down to do more, but if I look at it for the character of John Wick I think it’s the best place to leave it and it can be handed over to other characters.

CAINE AND AKIRA

The post-credit scene isn’t subtle, we see Caine (Donnie Yen) walking up to his daughter with flowers, when a hooded Akira (played by Rina Sawayama) walks up towards him and pulls out a knife. I think I speak on behalf of everyone and I’d be more than happy to pick up immediately here and see if Akira is able to take out Caine, or the fight that ensued and the ramifications that could cause being in front of Caine’s daughter. I’d love to see the duo resolve their differences and put them aside to help takedown the High Table. Donnie Yen is a legend of the action genre, and they’d be smart to use him as much as they can, and I felt like Rina Sawayama did a great job for film debut and offered something different. This is the John Wick film I want next in this universe!

TRACKER

A big strength of John Wick: Chapter 4 is the introduction of several interesting characters, and Tracker was one of the most interesting. Sitting on the fence between the High Table and John Wick, he’s just a man out to make his money and make a name for himself in this world. Shamier Anderson did a great job, not an actor I was overly familar with but he fit in perfectly and I’d be more than happy to see what more he can do alongside his dog.

BOWERY KING

Bowery King (played by Laurence Fishburne) was introduced in John Wick: Chapter 2 and made for a strong ally for John Wick. He has a tiny, tiny role in Chapter 4 and feels very much there to help put a bow on the series. His interesting world of homeless people and pigeons means there’s definitely stories that could be told on his way to takeover New York, however I feel more likely that his team and him will turn up in all the other spin-offs.

The fact that there’s so many characters and parts of this universe that we could see again, and I don’t think anyone would be opposed to seeing. The world building in this series has been some of the best Star Wars, it’s such a fascinating world that offers up just as interesting characters that could all add to the story and offer something different to what we’ve already had.
