Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Review

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Mad Max: Fury Road was the second film I reviewed after setting up my website so it holds a special place for me. It’s not a film I had watched a lot since seeing in IMAX when it was released, but it was so heavily in the conversation that year and seems to have been spoken about a lot since, which helped the film win 6 Oscars from the film’s 10 nominations. It has been spoken about since the release of Fury Road a prequel about Furiosa was in the works, and thats where George Miller wanted to take the story next.

Furiosa follows the title character as she is stolen away from her home and brought to Dementus (Chris Hemsworth), a leader of a group wanting to takeover the wasteland, when she is traded to Immortan Joe, Furiosa plans how she will get revenge on Dementus and make her way back to where she belongs.

George Miller returns us to his unique and interesting post apocalyptic world, and honestly I’d be more than happy if this is all we get of Miller’s work. It was 9 years since Fury Road, and the only film he has done in the mean time was Three Thousand Years of Longing, which again was very unique but doesn’t hit as hard as when Miller returns to the wasteland he created. His unique style is perfect for this world, and creates this gorgeous canvas that he plays around, and continues to build it out, and flesh out this universe. I can’t wait for more, and it won’t be as long with Mad Max: The Wasteland understood to be in production.

Anya Taylor-Joy leads the cast, playing the younger version of the character Charliza Theron played in Fury Road, and Taylor-Joy does a fantastic job, as she always does. She might have very limited lines, but so did Tom Hardy in Fury Road, and yet Taylor-Joy actually has a lot more to do, the film is completely about her character. There’s a lot of subtletlies to her performance which really elevate the film, and help make it fantastic viewing.

Chris Hemsworth has always struggled to get out of the shadow he made for himself with his performances as Thor in the MCU. One of his performances that does standout was his performance as a cult leader in Bad Times at the El Royale, and I think that was part he could tap into for his role of Dementus in this film. He gets a lot to do, and I think you can see in his performance he much he is enjoying getting to play this character and be in this world, particularly when you compare that to Thor: Love and Thunder which felt a bit tired.

The film is a longer one coming in at just under 2 and a half hours, but it absolutely flies by in a simialr way to Fury Road, purely due to the non stop nature, and relentless action, and I’m all here for it. It’s what I want from these films, the action is where these films thrive and why they get spoken about in such high regard. The action set pieces are top tier in what the film indsutry has to offer, another example of what stunt teams can do, over what CGI brings us. The slower, dialogue moments is where the film loses the perfect score for me, but I get why those scenes are there to break it up.

Overall, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a stunning return to George Miller’s Wasteland. Miller continues to expand his unique post apocalyptic world with stunning visuals, the best action set pieces in action and interesting characters. I can’t wait to see more of this bizzare world, and hope we do despite the film flopping at the box office. (Particularly in my screening, as I was the only person in there).
