The Insidious franchise was one of the few horror franchises created by one of the best directors in the horror genre, James Wan. Similarly to The Conjuring franchise, Wan directed the first 2 entries, which is exactly the point where these films lost their horror spark for me. They became generic, and lacked anything unique or even scary, and the direction to make them standouts in a crowded horror market. Despite a general reception being poor for Insidious: The Red Door, I quite enjoyed it and felt like it gave a little bit of a spark back to the series. The trailer for this 6th instalment had me worried it was back to the mediocrity of the 3rd and 4th entry.

Insidious: Out of the Further follows Gemma, a dentist, who discovers that when she is asleep she is going into the Further, but also has the ability to bring items back from there, something certain demons would fine advantageous.

I respect at least that once James Wan has had his fun with a franchise, he hands it over to small directors who haven’t done a big budget film before and lets them experience what that’s like. Adam Robitel directed Insidious: The Last Key and it certainly led to him getting the job of directing the Escape Room films (films I didn’t particularly like but did well). Jacob Chase feels like he will be in a similar vein. I imagine it allows each director to work with Wan for advice, and learn lessons they can take for their future work. I think particularly this franchise, I have a high bar for them to clear because it started so strong then had such a big dip in quality. A big question for any sequel is what does it add to this universe? And ultimately it does add one interesting idea, but it feels like it fails to execute it well enough to leave an impact. The film often feels flat and like they struggled to fully get a good grasp on what the story should actually be, leaving it feeling on the most part very generic. There are a couple of jumps, and one particular idea towards the end I thought was very clever.

The cast of these films doesn’t do anything that particularly stands out. Amelia Eve leads the film as Gemma, and has moments but often isn’t given much to work with and is more reacting to what’s going on. Brandon Perea doesn’t have much to do in this film with arguably the best filmography of the cast. Lin Shaye returns to her role once again, and does almost exactly the same thing she does in every one of these films.

I think what particularly sets the first film apart and what I like about the last instalment as well, is that instead of it feeling like a normal, generic ghost/haunting film, it treats the Darth Maul-looking, lipstick-faced Demon almost a fantasy character and feels like an actual threat. What particularly The Last Key failed to do for me that didn’t work was make the idea of the monster/villain/demon stick. This film also falls into that trap. There’s a line in the film about “when one door shuts, another one opens”. So in the last film they shut out the Darth Maul looking demon, and now the door that’s opened is this bland, generic, cult leader type that noone will remember, because he doesn’t do much, doesn’t look particularly memorable or does much of note. (Light spoiler here) Even when we get to this sequence that takes place in a dentist’s in the further, there’s far more interesting, scary and creepy characters there, but also the whole idea of ghosts needing to go to the dentist is so stupid, and doesn’t make sense, and isn’t played off in an effective way.

Overall, Insidious: Out of the Further isn’t the worst entry in this franchise, but is a long way from the best. A generic story, a forgettable villain, a couple of jump scares, bland set pieces that we’ve seen before and mixed with 1 good idea in just over 100 minutes isn’t enough. These films do relatively okay, so it’s unlikely to be the last of this universe, but I know this series could be more interesting and creative than this.
